This pin vise is used to create the twists on the square wire.  Before shipped to you, it is modified by drilling a hole in the woodened handle.  
 
This  vise is more comfortable to use than a conventional hex vise. The rounded head fits easily in the palm making it easier to twist. The textured surfaces help ensure a firm, secure grip on the tool as your work.
